Perspectives of a Legal Intern

CLIENTS!

A wide chasm of tortured emotions,
wronged egos,
 and bruised innocence,

ATTORNEYS!

A conglomerate of legal guru’s expected by clients to know it all
and to solve every legal malady under the sun

PFA’S! CUSTODY! EMPLOYMENT! BANKRUPTCY!

SOCIAL SECURITY! LANDLORD TENANT!

etc. etc. etc.

Bombarded by juxtapositions of client’s  emotions
of defeat and victory
Bereaved by paper work, deadlines and obstinate opposing counsel
Yet through it all!
These  legal guru’s with the help of the ancient and ever changing
 talismans comprising of

STATE REPORTERS! FEDERAL REPORTERS! CODE BOOKS!
etc. etc. etc.
continue to persevere in accomplishing what is best for their clients and the law.

SECRETARIES!

The ever-knowledgeable pillars of wisdom that have
kept the foundations of the legal profession strong and
rejuvenated for centuries.

PARALEGALS!

The lifeblood of the legal profession, their sharp memories,
technical expertise and PATIENCE enables
the smooth transitioning of the legal process.

Placement Summary

This poem was triggered in me this summer after a wonderful experience at Montgomery County Legal Aid Services. I had the privilege of working with some of the best secretaries, attorneys and paralegals, who were ever so patient in their ability to be mentors and teachers.

I enjoyed this placement because it gave me an opportunity to get exposed to different disciplines of the law that a regular law school classroom could not afford me. I was fortunate to have the Montgomery County Court House across the street from the office, thus I was able to walk across the street and observe the day-to-day dynamics of the courthouse and its officials. I also had the opportunity of doing intake by talking with clients face to face or on the telephone hotline service. I also became well acquainted with the Prothonotary. I learned how to draft legal memorandums, petitions, and preliminary objections.

This summer has truly been filled with wonderful experiences, and it has rekindled my desire to engage in Public Interest Law.
